Don’t Make Artworks - Make the Future

A CALL FOR ARTISTS ON THE OCCASION OF UN75

EARTH in 2045

A CALL FOR ARTISTS

to lead local dialogues envisioning the future

2020 is the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations. UN75 has put out a call for dialogue and discussion about what we want the UN’s 100th anniversary, in 2045, to look like.

Working with UN75 and The Future is Unwritten, ALI is putting artists in charge of this global convening - because artists think systemically, contextually, and holistically. Artists synthesize complexity. Artists’ processes are fundamentally about transformation and reorganization, destabilization and reconfiguration. You operate through ways of knowing intrinsic to humanity, and essential to our existence. If the last period of history relegated artists to be mere producers of objects, experiences, and entertainment, the one we’re entering now calls on them to lead by breaking through biases, old patterns of thought, and creating, above all, knowledge and action.

The world is in a desperate state, and it got there while artists were sidelined as ‘content-producers’ or servants to a commodity market.

We’re asking artists now to take the lead in conducting a global discourse on what needs to change, and presenting it to the United Nations at the end of 2020.

WORK WITH US to LEad The UN’s APPROACH tO addressing GLOBAL Crises

1.) INVITE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO HEAR FROM INTO A CONVERSATION CIRCLE, VIDEO CALL, or CONFERENCE CALL

Friends, mentors, family members, fellow artists, members of your community: something you have as an artist that is unusual is an eclectic social network. Let this be an occasion to reach out to people you always wanted to speak with, or whose voice you want heard.

2.) ASK THEM - WHAT MIGHT OUR LIFE ON EARTH BE LIKE IN 2045? WHAT DO WE DO TO GET THERE?

UN75 has some guiding questions to help, but trust your artists’ instincts about what is important to you and your community. We need to reimagine everything.

3.) SHARE YOUR NOTES/RECORDINGS WITH US

Artists’ Literacies Institute will gather your words, ideas, and actions to create an action-oriented summary to be included in an Artists’ Report to the United Nations, as well as to be shared back with you and your community with ideas and resources for implementation of potential projects and initiatives.

Did something exciting come out of your dialogue? We’ll work with you to strategize bringing that idea to life, help connect you to needed resources, and include your work in a UN-platformed exhibition in late 2020.
